In India, significant developments in the use of computers have taken place in the industrial and the commercial sectors. Computers have wide application in these fields. The computer, with its versatility, accelerates one’s ability to solve many problems related to teaching, research and administration that are encountered in higher education. This study was undertaken in order to sketch the current state of computer penetration, its use, application and its impact on higher education.

One of the foremost formal courses for computer science in the country was started by the Indian Statistical Institute in 1962. In the late 60’s IIT ’s (Bombay and Madras) introduced computer courses as elective under electrical engineering. Till early 70s computer courses were offered as a part of an engineering curriculum. To fulfill the requirements for acquiring the MCA, a student may clear all the courses in a minimum of three years and a maximum of 6 years. In case the student is unable to pass all the courses of the MCA programme in 6 years, s/he can continue for another two years by seeking Re-admission to the courses which s/he is unable to successfully complete. The University follows the ‘Credit System’ for its programmes. Each credit is worth 30 hours of student study time, comprising all the learning activities.
