In India, significant developments in the use of computers have taken place in the industrial and the commercial sectors. Computers have wide application in these fields. The computer, with its versatility, accelerates one’s ability to solve many problems related to teaching, research and administration that are encountered in higher education. This study was undertaken in order to sketch the current state of computer penetration, its use, application and its impact on higher education.

One of the foremost formal courses for computer science in the country was started by the Indian Statistical Institute in 1962. In the late 60’s IIT ’s (Bombay and Madras) introduced computer courses as elective under electrical engineering. Till early 70s computer courses were offered as a part of an engineering curriculum. Late it was imparted as a specialization course in only national institutions like IIT’s, and IISREC, that too in limited areas, computer hardware and software. In the 80s, courses on computer science, engineering and applications were introduced in several universities and institution with the encouragement and support of the central and state governments. At present there are following types of computer courses:

Certificate Courses in Programming
Diploma in Computer Application
Bachelor in Computer Application (BCA)
Master in Computer Application (MCA)

But today, Online MCA and Online BCA Course are in most demand at university level. There are more than 300 degree level colleges in the north eastern region, where BCA Course and MCA Programs and other computer courses can be started in order to generate manpower of professional level for joining IT-enabled services and also undertaking higher education.

During the meeting information technology infrastructure North-East was discussed in detail, especially the main requirement to IT industry in the region. Software technology Park, IT Park are basically 100 per cent EOU for undertaking software development work using the high speed data communication link for physical export (electronic and software) of professional services – or consultancy services/development of software.

Computer engineers though are mostly involved in IT industries, they are gaining more in demand in other industries viz., banking, and airlines, public utilities, manufacturing sector etc., as industry are becoming more technology oriented and computerized.

Computing professionals might find themselves in a variety of environments in academics, research, industry, government, private and business organization-analyzing problems for solutions, formulating and testing, using advanced communications or multi-media equipment, or working in teams for product development. Here’s a short list of research and vocational areas in computing.

Today, computer engineering jobs continue to command competitive salaries and opportunities. Their unique skill set makes them invaluable for every company, especially those that involves communication and technology. So if you are interested to pursue a computer engineer job, here are 10 essential information about your prospective career:

1. What does a computer engineer do? They are equipped with the competencies of both an electrical engineer and a computer scientist. The marriage of two highly technical professions resulted to a very in-demand offspring.

2. The job description can be used in any industry where computers play a crucial role in its business operation. They can design new systems to meet evolving business requirements, and also help maintain and improve these set-ups.

3. A salary reveals the scope and depth of their duties and responsibilities. In the United States, the median annual earning of a computer engineering job reaches the $100,000 pay scale. It is one of the highest paid specializations in the engineering profession.

4. Robotics is one of the more exciting growth areas of a computer engineering career. As businesses continue to seek ways to lower operational costs, the advent of a well-oiled and flawless machine becomes an attractive promise.

5. Much of our modern conveniences are the creation of this field. Since embedded systems comprise an important area of this profession, then we owe our digital media players, mobile phones, alarm systems, and x-ray machines to these forward-looking scientists.

6. Because of its popularity, it is offered in a large number of universities and colleges. Each has their own expertise, so choose an institution that can give you the best training in your preferred field.

7. Interesting fact: guess who will be the next to take on a computer engineering job? None other than the Barbie doll, who has been anyone from a fitness instructor to a high-powered business executive.

8. Hardware or software? Computer engineers need not choose one, because they are adept in both. They are concerned from the architecture to the programmed design of a system.

9. Computer engineers have the option to specialize on the following areas: artificial intelligence, computer systems, computer architecture, computer networks and integrated circuits, as well as systems and computations.

10. These are the non-negotiable skills and attitudes of a computer engineer: analytical, detail-oriented, and must be able to work in team situations, especially when fixing a systems problem where other departments are involved.
